An app based station is cheaper to run and gives you the guest history. It also excludes everyone who will not install an app for a charge: tourists, older guests, and anyone on a foreign SIM without data. In a hotel lobby that is a large share of the room.
A card unit trades a higher cost per transaction for a shorter path to the first rental. In a tourist market the trade usually pays; in an office canteen it usually does not.
